CHAPTER XIX

Meru, Chime, the people, the room, the hermitage, the valley, spun out of sight as Meru intoned his spell and the phrase “ends of the earth” echoed from the mountaintops.

Mike twirled end over end, tangling with Toni-Marie, spinning high in the air and rocketing forward with terrifying speed, as if he’d been shot from a cannon. Finally he saw nothing but Toni-Marie, whose expression mirrored the dismay and bewilderment he felt.

“Oh, this is great,” Mike moaned. “Why did you have to open your big mouth? Look where it got us.”

“Sorry,” Toni-Marie said, “I just got a little carried away… . Well,” she said, after considering the void around her, “I guess we both got a lot carried away, actually. Where the hell are we?”

“I don’t know,” Mike admitted. “But Meru said we had to wander the ends of the earth. Since all there is left of the earth is ends, maybe we get to pick.”

“Just so it’s not here,” Toni-Marie said. “Where do you want to go?”

“Home, of course. Kalapa. Shambala.”

“No desire to travel abroad at all, eh?”

“Let’s just go home,” Mike said impatiently. “You’re the one with the experience at getting around. Help me.”

“Pardon me,” Toni-Marie sniffed. “I lost my ruby slippers someplace, and anyhow, right now I’m incorporate and haven’t got any heels to click together.” She looked all around her at absolutely nothing and grew, if anything, paler.

Mike decided that maybe trying to take command was the wrong tactic, and switched to wheedling. “Toni-Marie, did I tell you about all the babies being born there?”

“You may have mentioned something.”
